Klikit-Linux "first flight" (0.1-alpha)

to download the .iso (DVD image) of Klikit-Linux "first flight" (0.1-alpha),  right click on the DOWNLOAD LINK below, and Save Link As... (about 895 MB)

DOWNLOAD LINK

the md5sum of the .iso image is: a36f80e7bd7ea186c416f21f2c622a59

to check it,  open a terminal wherever you downloaded the .iso,  and type: cat klikit-ff-0.1.iso | md5sum

Before you download it, or while you are downloading it  Wink, it is important that You read the information below:

it is very important that you understand that THIS VERSION IS AN ALPHA RELEASE, which means that it is not stable, it may be very buggy, it is only for testing purposes, and should NOT be used in ANY system with important data. The team behind the development of Klikit-Linux will not be responsible in any way.

Once you download the .iso you will have to use a burning program such as k3b, Brasero or Nero. Do NOT burn the .iso as data, you have to burn it as a (DVD) image.

Known bugs will go here:
*
*
*
*
*

.
.

USING THE LIVECD (DVD):
(sometimes it is necessary to set the BIOS in the PC to boot from the cd-rom/dvd-rom)
Place the Klikit-Linux DVD into your computer
reboot the computer.
you will get the following screen:

Highlight the first option of the menu (Start or Install Klikit-Linux), and hit Enter in your keyboard:

the DVD should boot, and after a while you will be logged as user (Username: user) into the Klikit-Linux Desktop :

If you logout,  and need to login again, or you need to do any administrative work using sudo,  use the following info:

Username: user  Password: user

If needed there is also an root account, which you can login into with the following info:

Username: root   Password: root

It is advisable, for security reasons, to login as user, Klikit-Linux is setup in a way that doing administrative things as a user
is quite simple, but if you want to login as root it is your computer, and it is your choice!...

.
.

INSTALLATION:
Once you have the system running as a LiveCD, you have the option of installing it in your system.
In the upper left corner of the desktop there is an Install icon, just click on it to launch the installer:

It will ask for a password to continue, enter user
Now Just follow through the steps, answering accordingly to your choices.

When you get to the part of "Who are you?", please do it as indicated in the following image:

if you don't follow these step it will not work. Don't worry, once you login into the system you will be able, if you wish, to create an account
with any name and password you choose (see below for instructions of how to add a user).

.
.

LOGIN IN FOR THE FIRST TIME:

If you just created a new user, you have to logout and then enter the information about the new user you just created:

You will be prompted with the following info, and then you will have to enter a new password:

When you login the very first time into the Desktop,  you will get the following messages,  don't worry about them,
and just click on Ignore, they will not appear again. (I expect to have those gone in the next release):

.
.

ADDING A USER TO YOUR INSTALLED SYSTEM:
(the instructions also work with the LiveCD)

Go to the Launch Menu (in the lower left corner) and select KControl (KDE Control Center):

Then select System Administration:

Select User Management, and then Administrator Mode. It will ask for a Password, enter user

Then click on New:

enter whatever name you want to use:

If you want to give your user administrator rights (it will make your life easier), in the Secondary Groups, after
scanner, insert sudo and admin (don't forget the commas):

Do NOT forget to enter a password for your user, select any password.  When you login for the first time
with this new user the system will require you to change the password:

Don't forget to click on Apply and OK:

Your user is all set... Have Fun!!!

.
.

CONFIGURING KNEMO (the network monitor):
When you login into you new installation, it's possible that the Network Monitor (KNemo) didn't detect
your network card correctly:

To configure it, right click on the icon (lower right corner), and select Configure KNemo:

Now just click on Defaults and then on Apply, that should "fix" it:

I believe (Chris... please correct me if I am wrong here)....

We should test this release amongst ourselves, for now. Let's keep this under wraps for awhile so we can test and find the major or minor bugs (if they even exist) BEFORE we make any kind of announcements in other forums. We want the "initial experience" for new users to be mostly positive, so we will be the bug hunters for now....

I actually disagree with Harvey I believe many hands make light work it is labeled as an alpha so all but a few should understand there will be bugs.

I am actually going with Harvey on this one.  I think it is fair for a BETA to get a review, but I have seen Alphas get destroyed in online buzz on distrowatch and /.  Many people say..."Golly, a distro that cannot do xyz?  What a joke"  Only a few point out it is an alpha.  For some reasons, Beta's get treated more fairly than alphas.  Ever seen an Ubuntu alpha or a Mepis alpha without being a member?  There is a reason for this.

I'm with both  Roll Eyes ...
What I mean is that we could at first do some in-house testing, and then if its good enough consider going public..

There...

we have gotten an answer from Chris... Smiley

My line of reasoning John is what Patrick pointed out... We don't want someone spouting that this is a HUNK OF JUNK during the initial ALPHA release. Let's make sure we find any bugs that we can... point them out to Chris, get them fixed... and then go public.

A 3rd optoin would be to invite a few trusted folk, like maybe elinux & Bowhuntr, maybe Jasp if he still has a computer & Cloudy Wizzard, to have a look at it as well.  Maybe even Captn's favorite not-conformist Dean. Wink

I think that Chris has to make that call. It should be by "invitation only" for this first release, though... and since this is Chris's baby... it's his call.

I like BT's suggestion. My feeling is 5 guys testing in their spare time is not going to be as effective as 20, 30, or more doing the same thing. I understand about the reviews they hang around forever and may turn people off.

It would also bring in more hardware stuff.  My hd inventory is pretty much stock stuff from FSF - Hardware Devices (pure dumb luck, not planed) & I've no wifi.

Cheers

Chris has told me that he wants to keep it "in house" for now... with limited people... of course, if he changes his mind... elinux and Bowhunter would be of great help. Cloudy Wizzard has said that he only has one box now, so he isn't even checking out the *spire stuff, that I could tell...

Once again... it's Chris's call, and he will let us know if and who he wants to invite to the "party"... Wink Grin Grin Grin

Fair enough, maybe an interim step then.

I will defer for now but I do want to say most of us have Linux friendly hardware so it may not be much of a work out. I do have access to several different versions of wireless so I can help there.
