I really want/need to remove, or at least change, the text "Launch" that sits next to the Linspire icon on the K-Menu. I have read that there are settings to do this, and that since Linspire is using KDE, that the name of the setting should be LauchButtonText="Launch", but the configuration file is not in the same place as it is in some of the other variations of Debian Linux.

If anyone could please tell me where to find the setting I would be grateful -- especially since the Tech Support people emailed me stating "Although there is a method for changing the appearance of the Launch button, we do not offer support or information on doing so." I think that they are scared that one of us might even remove their special 'L' that helps to advertise that we are running their software.

Thanks for your help.

Ken Jones told me that you can take the text off the Launch button by
1. edit /etc/kde3/kickerrc,
2. find the [KMenu] text, and
3. change 'ShowText = true' to 'ShowText = false'.

I don't think Support are stonewalling you because they want your PC screen to display the brand. After all, if that were the case, they surely wouldn't encourage you to keep looking, by telling you it can be done.

I think they just want to reduce the number of non-standard configurations, and get people to take responsibility for supporting themselves if they make the system non-standard.

Peter

Peter,
Thank you very much. That worked perfectly, and really helped a lot.

When ever I use this machine for making and testing or grading pre-engineering labs for my students, I need to have a lot of different documents in a lot of different applications all open at the same time. In order to be able to still read the titles and descriptions I had to make the bar extra tall and remove most of the other applets and buttons. This however made the word "Launch" truly HUGE. I now have the quick launcher applet and the pager applet both in just the space that was freed up by removing "LAUNCH."

Thanks again.
Jeremy

Right Peter, I'm gona Kick myself for not asking you first how to modify the Launch button. I have spent the better part of the last month teaching myself a stright debian OS just so I coud install kbfx-0.4.7.3 so I could then install Eye_Candy - kbfx themes + debian installer from kde-look, all to change the Launch button for one of my bhoyos, just cuz I love him. What a father will do for his son. OK, so I really have gone down this road for my own enjoyment & learning Laughing And learn I have.

Thanks for the tip.

Jeremy, if Peter's advice is not quite what you are looking for, which is prolly not the case, you can have a look at the two links above. I was unable to get them to work in Five-O but maybe you can.

Cheers

If you wanna change the button text you can use this. I have only tested my 64-bit version, but it should work.

Here is a cut an paste installer Wink

cd /usr/lib
mv libkdeinit_kicker.so libkdeinit_kicker.so.bak && wget http://www.jasp.com/nonsense/kicker_kmenu_text/libkdeinit_kicker.so
kicker &

Edit /etc/kde3/kickerrc and put:

LaunchButtonText = Something

in the KMenu section...
