- misterjangles, on 11/05/2007, -0/+1i had pretty good luck with G4L converting an ancient server with a 5-disk array into a virtual machine. But, it was a little tricky to figure out how to use it.

- Wrathernaut, on 11/05/2007, -2/+1I too had my hopes dashed when the paranormal was not involved. James Randi's million could have been mine!
- SiNN4R, on 11/05/2007, -1/+1Ditto.
- sancho, on 11/07/2007, -0/+0The people digging you down obviously didn't get the joke--so they probably didn't see the movie Ghost.
- PATSCRU, on 11/05/2007, -0/+1I actually thought that blizzard released the abandoned Starcraft Ghost code as an open source project....

- Very interesting. I'll have to give this a shot at work.
- "Whether you have 2 computers or 20,000 computers in your organization, FOG is Open Source"
*****, does it reset to commercial if I have any less or any more?
Or is it referring specifically to those two numbers?

- Would this work across a raid array? I know I had issues with ghost doing that.3 Replies — best has 6 diggs
- MasteRR, on 11/05/2007, -0/+6If it is truely hardware raid and not hardware assisted raid I don't see why not. That might be your problem. Most onboard and cheap card RAID is not hardware raid, but hardware assisted software RAID that requires drivers, thus will not work. Anything under $200 is probably this. If it requires you to install something to see the RAID correctly, then it isn't hardware RAID.
- qwertydvorak, on 11/05/2007, -1/+2couldn't you boot from cd and individually ghost the drives in the array ? would the outcome be the same, but just a pain having to do it over and over for each drive ?
- misterjangles, on 11/05/2007, -0/+1I had a situation like this with an old Compaq server w/ a drive array and g4l worked well for me. As MasteRR said, if the hardware is controlling the array, then the imaging software should see it as one drive.
- eh? only supports xp and vista and only one partition disks? il pass2 Replies — best has 5 diggs
- arcticblue, on 11/05/2007, -0/+5I
don't mean to troll or anything, but I just wanted to point out that
this seems to be a current trend with open source software; it's only
halfway finished and missing important features. It's nice to release
it for testing and stuff while work is being done to finish the
project, but to release it as an "open source alternative" at the stage
it is in now doesn't seem right.
- Firehed, on 11/05/2007, -0/+1I agree, but for 95% of the users, XP/Vista support with only one partition is all they need. If nothing else, it's a fantastic time-saver if you're doing multiple builds of the same system or just want a more solid restore point than what System Restore gets you.
- sinurgy, on 11/05/2007, -0/+1That is definitely a dealbreaker! I normally store the newly created images on a second partition.

- MasteRR, on 11/06/2007, -0/+4dd, clonezilla, g4l, there are plenty of alternatives.

- scaine, on 11/05/2007, -0/+1Isn't
dd just a cli command to image one disk/partition to another? If so,
then you can't reasonably compare a cli command to a well thought out
gui environment incorporating PXE boot and host renaming. Haven't used
FOG myself right enough, so it may well not be "well thought out", but
it's obviously trying to present a complete solution.
Think I'll check out PING too. If something can replace Altiris, that's got to be a good thing.

- Below viewing threshold. ShowFor Windows Backup and Recovery, Drive Image XML works well for me.. It's free as in beer (but not open source), and it's made by Runtime, the same company that makes the disk recovery software that saved my butt more than once. I loaded it with BartPE on a flash drive and restored my Vista partition just fine.
http://www.runtime.org/dixml.htm - After looking at most of the solutions in this class, I liked PING ( http://ping.windowsdream.com/ ) the best. Under VERY active development as well...1 Reply — best has 1 digg
- disgruntled, on 11/05/2007, -0/+1PING rules. we dumped a pricey Altiris setup in exchange for it. It actually took more time to uninstall Altiris than it did to install PING
- SystemImager is my favorite. So much in fact, that I'm writing a book about it.
It does things none of the others can offer..1 Reply — best has 1 digg- Stonekeeper, on 11/05/2007, -0/+1Err.. like not being able to install Windows?
- I started using Acronis since Ghost is too damn old to continue using (outdated NIC drivers system and designed around floppies). The complete suite will allow you to repartition...partitions as you like (Even changing dynamic to basic discs for XP/2003/Vista). I can also upload an image from the boot CD or write from a windows share. I haven't had much use for it, personally, this past year but I know there's more to it than just that.1 Reply — best has 3 diggs
- kenplaysviola, on 11/05/2007, -0/+3I also use Acronis TrueImage Workstation to image my Windows machines at work. One of its best feature is the "Universal Restore". You can take an image and migrate it to a completely different system with different hardware and it is able to restore the image. It forces Windows to detect the new hardware. Other than that, all your profiles, settings, programs, and files are all in tact and none of my users realize that anything has changed.
- Does it restore bare metal? If not it is useless. Acronis and altaris can restore to hardware independent systems.2 Replies — best has 1 digg

Sorry , If it was not clear on the blog
- sazmy, on 11/05/2007, -0/+1http://sourceforge.net/projects/freeghost/
- From the FOG forums: "Fog, as of right now doesn't boot clients off of a CD, DVD, or thumb drive. With FOG all the imaging is done in client/server style with a PXE boot image. All the client's images are stored on the server."
I work for an organization where I don't have access to DHCP server settings, so PXE isn't going to work for me. I'll stay tuned though and will give this a shot when they are able to boot from a CD or floppy and initiate the imaging that way. - While Ghost style backups have their place, I'm partial to running Rsync via a FreeNAS server. In my case, it's necessary to have both since I need a backup of the C drive's initial configuration and frequent delta backups of the artwork files for all the custmers at the print shop I work for right now.
- there is an Open Source alternate to Acronis
Please check this post, it was inspired from your comments
http://geek2live.blogspot.com/2007/11/complete-hd- ... - I wish they would call it "Norton Ghost" in the title. It took me ages to work out what they were talking about.
- There is also Clonezilla: http://clonezilla.sourceforge.net/
- There is also another alternative - Clonezilla: http://clonezilla.sourceforge.net/
- I've used clonezilla.
It's very nice and the folks at work were impressed with it.
It's roughly analagous to 'Norton Ghost Enterprise' and is based off of work done by the National Center for High Performance Computing out of Taiwan for DRBL, which is a system for doing network booting for nodes in large Linux clusters.
DRBL is a bunch of perl scripts developed by students for doing network booting. They are very complete and contain most of what you'd ever want for that task. Clonezilla adds support for using Partimage and NTFSClone for doing network cloning. They support most common things like sending drive images to multiple machines simultaniously by using the ethernet multicast protocol. Very fast and uses very effective compression. On a fresh XP install on a 40gig drive it takes about 15 minutes to install the image to 20+ computers on a 100Mb/s ethernet connection. It can also support things like autoconfiguring clients, including Window's passwords/computer names/keys and such things.
All of it completely free and open source software. Requires a Linux server to run with DNS, TFTP, and a few other dependancies. All of it is well documented on their website. - Below viewing threshold. ShowVery interesting. is anybody tested it?
